Growing Voting Bloc: Latino Youth

UnidosUS kicked off Power of 18, a voter outreach campaign geared at mobilizing eligible Latinos to register and vote in the upcoming midterm elections. The campaign builds on UnidosUS’s (formerly NationalCouncil of La Raza) history of voter education and outreach, this time leveraging an online platform—Powerof18.com—to engage a growing voting bloc: Latino youth. The campaign was unveiled at a press conference held during the 2018 UnidosUS Leaders in Action Summit in Washington, D.C. in March.

“We have witnessed over the past several months the courage, leadership, and tenacity of our young people, who have galvanized efforts to challenge our national leaders on a number of critical issues from DACA to gun control laws,” said UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía.

“This new generation of voters is reminding us that we hold the power within us to make change and it starts by registering to vote,” concluded Murguía.

The Power of 18 complements UnidosUS civic engagement campaign that includes their High School Democracy Project, voter boot camps, and on-the-ground canvassing efforts in key states.

As the voter-eligible population continues to grow, so does the need to lift the barriers to registration facing many Hispanic Americans. With this campaign, UnidosUS will work to bridge voter turnout gaps and encourage eligible Latinos to not only register and cast a ballot this November but also mobilize the rest of the community to do the same.
