I recently had the opportunity to speak with Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold about her campaign for Attorney General. Although our conversation was limited, I wanted to make the most of our time together.

We discussed what her first priorities would be if elected Attorney General, and what immediate actions she would take to address the challenges affecting Colorado families, including the rising cost of living, immigration, our justice system, the rule of law, and consumer rights.

Read El Semanario’s Official Endorsement for Jena Griswold.

Below is our discussion.

El Semanario: Secretary Griswold, if elected Colorado’s next Attorney General, what would be your first priority and what immediate actions would you take upon assuming office?

Secretary Jena Griswold: There are two major things that need immediate attention.

First, you alluded to the affordability crisis, but what I would call the Trump crisis. I grew up in a working-class family that, at times, relied on food banks and on food stamps. I know what it means to work around the clock and struggle to get by. And as Secretary of State, I cracked down on fraudsters who tried to rip off hard working Coloradoans.

As Attorney General, I will tackle the affordably crises that means holding corporate monopolies accountable for price gouging Coloradoans.

Standing up to corporate landlords to stop them from illegally gouging renters, standing up to corporate polluters, stopping grocery store mergers so that food prices aren’t even further manipulated. And fighting data centers to pay their own way, to stop utility bill increases and protect our water.

And when it comes to Trump, look we are facing a lawless president. I’ve taken on Trump and MAGA as Secretary of State leading many of the fights to defend our democracy. And as Attorney General, I am going to continue standing up to this federal government to protect our rights, to stop his attacks on Colorado’s elections and that includes holding ICE accountable for breaking the law; and ensuring that all Coloradans have access to critical reproductive healthcare, including birth care, IVF and abortion access.

El Semanario: The Trump administration has cut or frozen federal funding for many programs that our communities depend on, including healthcare, nutrition, education, childcare, disaster relief, and other essential services. Lawsuits have been filed challenging these actions yet concerns over funding cuts and delays continue. If elected Attorney General, what would you do differently in your first days in office to challenge these actions, protect federal funding, and ensure that Colorado families and communities continue receiving the services they depend on?”

Secretary Jena Griswold: Well, I think it is incredibility important to stand up to this administration. Trump is the most corrupt president in history, he has carried out a campaign of retribution against Colorado over Tina Peters and our mail ballot system, and I think ultimately, we have to take on his lawlessness.”

I do want to highlight that my opponent Michael Allen is a steadfast Trump supporter who will put his loyalty to the president ahead of what’s best for Colorado. He refuses to stand up to Trumps’s attack on Colorado’s elections, and he has said he’d abandon most of the lawsuits that Colorado already has filed against the Trump administration. He supports an abortion ban, even in the case of victims of rape and incest. So, I think ultimately, we need someone who is willing to stand up to this administration, Colorado has filed or joined at this point over eighty lawsuits to protect Coloradans including Trump’s efforts to restrict SNAP benefits illegally, move Space Command, impose tariffs, restrict mail ballots and that list goes on and on and on. I ‘ve been clear these lawsuits have been filed or joined because they are critical to protect our people, our state and stand up to this federal administration, and my opponent ultimately cannot be trusted to put his loyalty to Donald Trump behind doing what’s right for Colorado.
