For many families across our communities, the challenges they face are not abstract political debates. They are daily concerns about economic opportunity, consumer protection, public safety, access to government services, civil rights, and whether their voices are heard and respected within our democratic institutions.

The Office of Attorney General plays a critical role in addressing those concerns. As the state’s chief legal officer, the Attorney General serves as the people’s lawyer—protecting residents from fraud and abuse, defending civil rights, ensuring equal access to justice, and upholding the constitutional principles upon which both our state and nation were founded.

The Weekly Issue/El Semanario endorses Sec. of State Jena Griswold for Colorado Attorney General as she exemplifies representation for all residents of Colorado. Her experience and actions as Secretary of State since 2018, has set significant guardrails protecting our elections and democracy, while continuing to battle the relentless attacks on our country by Trump and his administration in their attempts to ignore our constitutional laws.

In May 2025, the Department of Justice sent a letter demanding that the Secretary of State of Colorado, Jena Griswold, produce to the federal government statewide voter registration databases. The federal government’s requests for private, sensitive voter data appears to be in connection with never-before-seen efforts by the United States to construct a national voter database, and to otherwise use untested forms of database matching to scrutinize voter rolls. Rightfully fearing that providing this sensitive information to the federal government could allow for the undermining of elections in Colorado, the Secretary of State’s office declined to turn over the requested data.

Jena Griswold has endured unimaginable threats by far right extremists for doing her job to secure elections. Last year, an individual was sentenced for sending multiple threats to public servants. On May 29, 2025, a federal District Court Judge for the District of Colorado sentenced a Colorado man to 37 months of confinement, for sending threats to multiple public servants, including Secretary of State Jena Griswold and current Governor of Arizona Katie Hobbs. The man pleaded guilty. The man was in illegal possession of firearms and was arrested in August 2024 in Cortez, Colorado, as Secretary Griswold was in the hospital delivering her child.

Colorado’s communities continue to grow and diversify. Latina/o/e families, immigrants, working families, small-business owners, seniors, and young voters all deserve a government that is responsive, transparent, and committed to protecting their rights. The next Attorney General must ensure that access to justice is not determined by income, language, background, or ZIP code.

What Jena Griswold Has Accomplished as Secretary of State

Since taking office in 2018, Secretary Griswold has overseen 11 statewide elections, protected Coloradans constitutional right to vote, and supported small businesses by cutting red tape and combatting business fraud.

Secretary Griswold has modernized voter registration and ballot tracking, protected Coloradans from business fraud, and championed legislation to strengthen Colorado’s democracy and business environment.

Examples include:

  • Launching statewide systems so that every Colorado voter can track their ballot and fix signature or ID discrepancies with ease;
  • Increasing mail ballot drop boxes statewide by more than 70%;
  • Guaranteeing drop boxes and voting centers on public college campuses and tribal lands to make it easy for all eligible Coloradans to cast a ballot.
  • Leading and implementing automatic voter registration reform, which has registered hundreds of thousands of eligible Coloradans to vote;
  • Leading laws to require clear disclaimers on election communications that have been generated or substantially altered by AI and to criminalize efforts to use fake electors schemes to overturn a state’s electoral results.
  • Protecting Colorado’s elections from insider threats, Colorado’s election workers from doxing, and Colorado’s voters from fear or intimidation at the ballot box.
  • Establishing a multilingual hotline so that voters who speak languages other than English can receive assistance translating ballot content.
  • Protecting Colorado business owners from deceptive, third-party business filing solicitations that encourage the payment of exorbitant costs for services which can be done directly through the Secretary of State’s Office.
  • Creating an award-winning complaint program to identify fraudulent business filings and ensure that victim information is redacted from pertinent public records.
  • Championing a year-long fee relief to reduce the cost of registering a business or trade name with the Secretary of State’s Office to just $1.
  • Establishing a unit within the Secretary of State’s office focused specifically on protecting Colorado’s elections from cyber-attacks, foreign interference, and disinformation campaigns;

Jena Griswold is a highly accomplished elected official, and in her role as Secretary of State she has also fought against unprecedented actions by Donald Trump and MAGA extremists. Jena has been a national leader in defending democracy. When the Colorado Supreme Court determined that Trump had engaged in insurrection, Jena followed the Constitution and urged that Trump should be removed from the ballot despite receiving death threats from extremists.

As Attorney General, the challenges facing Colorado extend well beyond elections. Consumer fraud, housing instability, discrimination, predatory business practices, identity theft, and civil rights violations continue to affect families across the state—often disproportionately impacting working-class communities and communities of color.

Our communities need leadership grounded in protecting families, defending constitutional rights, ensuring public accountability, and expanding access to justice. The Attorney General’s Office must remain a place where residents can seek protection and enforcement of the law when they need it most.

At a time when trust in public institutions is being tested, Colorado needs an Attorney General who understands that the Constitution is not a partisan instrument, but the foundation of democratic governance. The rule of law, equal protection, due process, and individual rights must remain guiding principles for those entrusted with public office.

The future of our communities depends on strong institutions, civic participation, and leaders who understand that public service is ultimately about protecting people, preserving constitutional rights, and expanding opportunity for future generations.

For these reasons, and based on her record of public service and commitment to voter access, election integrity, and constitutional governance, The Weekly Issue El Semanario proudly endorses Jena Griswold for Attorney General of Colorado.
