The New Florida Majority (NewFM) has partnered with dozens of organizations to support several Community Emergency Operations Centers (CEOCs) in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach and Jacksonville to collect donations to give immediate relief to the areas affected by Hurricane Dorian. Since the hurricane has avoided South Florida, the funds and items donated so far will be collected and stored for future storms that may pose a threat to Florida. In the meantime we are currently using CEOCs as relief centers to collect items to send to thousands of families in the Bahamas who lost their homes and need clothes, food, and shelter.
“Miami has a rich Bahamian history and it’s only right for us to assist our families and neighbors in the Bahamas. We are working very hard with partners to send relief as fast as we can to the islands, and we will continue to receive donations throughout the week,” said Valencia Gunder, CEOC Founder, Criminal Justice Program Manager for the New Florida Majority and Director of the Smile Trust, who has been leading relief efforts in Miami-Dade.
The CEOCs and donation drives have been a joint effort of organizations such as the New Florida Majority, the Smile Trust, the Miami Climate Alliance, Old Dillard Museum, Catalyst Miami, the Miami Workers Center, the Florida Immigrant Coalition, FANM, Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center, Circle of Brotherhood, Sisterhood Circle, The ARC, and Dade County Street Response Team, among others.

“We know very well that our neighbors are our first responders, and when the lives of children and entire families are at risk, we have no time to waste. We are proud of how our communities in Florida have stepped up to prepare for the storm, and to immediately support those who have been affected by it after it passed, even when they are hundreds of miles away,” said Nancy Metayer, Climate Justice Program Manager for the New Florida Majority.
