Social Enterprise Coffee Shop benefits Girls Inc. of Metro Denver

Strong, Smart & Bold Beans (Bold Beans), a social enterprise of Girls Inc. of Metro Denver (GIMD), opens at their new coffee shop location of STEAM on the Platte, 1407 Zuni Street, Denver on Thursday, November 16.

Bold Beans will be open Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, serving coffee and espresso drinks, breakfast and lunch items, baked goods, snacks and bottled beverages. Coffee-related products and gifts will also be available for purchase.

“We are thrilled to open the new and expanded Bold Beans location at STEAM on Platte and continue to expose teen girls to real-world business development concepts,” said Sonya Ulibarri, GIMD President & CEO. “By investing in a social enterprise model, Girls Inc. is able to provide girls with innovative programs and leadership opportunities, while also generating revenue and awareness of Girls Inc.’s mission and impact.”

Bold Beans provides GIMD with an earned revenue stream and platform to deliver economic literacy and entrepreneurship curriculum to middle school and high school girls. Since its inception, girls have played a central role in the launch and development of the business. Early on girls developed the business idea, contributed to the business plan, led a pilot program, and raised start-up funds. Today, these girls are Bold Baristas who have leadership roles in product development, marketing/public relations, and community engagement.

For many of the girls involved, Bold Beans is their first paid job. Halla, a Bold Barista and high school junior, remarked: “Working at Bold Beans has let me discover myself as a worker. I’ve been able to make mistakes and learn from them while still having a great support system and great people to go through it with.”

Major support for Bold Beans new location has been provided by the Daniels Fund, Ruth Ray Hunt Fund, and Fidelity Investments.

Bold Beans will have a Grand Re-Opening event on Thursday, November 16th from 5pm-7pm at STEAM on the Platte, 1401 Zuni Street. It will feature a short program about the work of Bold Beans, coffee and hot chocolate samples, and hors d’oeuvres.

Between March 2015 to October 2017, GIMD operated a pilot Bold Beans coffee cart at the Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales Library.  In the first year of operation, Bold Baristas employed fifteen teen girls who earned over $27,000 in wages. At STEAM on the Platte, Bold Beans will double the number of girls employed, expand operating hours and menu offerings, serve a larger customer base, sell year-round coffee products and gifts, and participate in catering and pop-up events.
