Congresswoman Diana DeGette

Donald Trump is beginning his presidency the way the last one ended, with pure recklessness and mean-spirited efforts that will do nothing to help the American people. He is reinforcing the divides in our politics by pardoning violent insurrectionists who assaulted police officers, withdrawing from global partnerships designed to keep us safe and healthy, invalidating the lives of trans Americans and other vulnerable groups, and siding with foreign adversaries who are exploiting social media to spy on Americans, among many others.
January 6 is a stain in our nation’s history, and those who followed the president’s orders and attacked our Capitol should be held accountable, not given unconditional pardons. I was in the gallery that day and saw firsthand the bravery of the Capitol Police who defended us and our democracy. Later, once charges were brought, I served as an impeachment manager because I knew that President Trump’s actions could not go unpunished. The president is attempting to rewrite history because he knows that he got away with a crime. These actions are an affront to the men and women who defended the Capitol four years ago and continue to protect us today.
He is showing his true colors by surrounding himself with the world’s wealthiest people and disregarding those who elected him.
Additionally, his decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization is unacceptable and will only make our nation and world more vulnerable. It will devastate our ability to monitor and respond to biological threats, whether natural or deliberate. Our retreat from leadership on the global stage will also allow foreign adversaries to fill the gap and increase their influence at our expense.
It is clear that we must take bipartisan action to fix our broken immigration system, and as always, I stand ready to work across the aisle with those who are serious about finding real solutions. Unfortunately, the immigration Executive Orders taken together are basically a total ban on all immigration into the U.S., including people who have valid visas. Instead of mass deportations that tear apart families and hurt our economy, we can strengthen our border, reduce exploitation, empower millions of families, and further American prosperity, but it’s clear the president’s priorities are elsewhere.
Plain and simple, none of the president’s actions have made a meaningful difference in lowering the cost of living, improving the lives of the American people, or addressing the issues we currently face. He is showing his true colors by surrounding himself with the world’s wealthiest people and disregarding those who elected him.
