On April 7, NextGen, a pre-apprenticeship program powered by The Semilla Project, officially opened applications for its highly anticipated Summer & Fall 2025 cohorts. The paid program, designed for young people ages 18-24, is now accepting applicants eager to build careers in outdoor education, natural resources management, and energy innovation. The deadline to apply is May 5th, 2025.

NextGen is a first-of-its-kind program in New Mexico, prioritizing NM youth looking to gain hands-on experience and launch a career that matters—not just a job that pays the bills. Over the course of 10 weeks, participants receive paid training, develop professional skills, and are connected to real career opportunities in New Mexico’s fastest-growing industries.

“NextGen is about unlocking the talent and leadership already rooted in our communities,” said Janeth Antillon, Recruitment Director for NextGen. “Young people shouldn’t have to leave New Mexico to find opportunity—they should be able to find it right here, in careers that align with their values and the future we’re building together.”

From outdoor education, sustainable agriculture, forestry, watershed management, and herbalism and traditional ecological knowledge, NextGen offers more than just technical training—it creates a pathway to long-term careers. The program is also focused on removing barriers to participation, offering stipends, transportation support, and mentorship throughout the program.

“We know that access is everything,” Antillon added. “That’s why we meet young people where they are and provide not just training—but support, community, and a vision of what’s possible.”

Whether participants are looking to pursue a career in outdoor education, natural resources management, or energy innovation, NextGen opens doors and offers the real-world skills employers are looking for—without requiring a degree or previous experience.

Applications are now open at nextgen-nm.org. Those not ready to apply can also sign up for updates and learn more about future opportunities.

“If you’ve ever felt like you didn’t know where to start—NextGen is your start,” said Antillon. “We’re not just investing in careers—we’re investing in future leaders.”
