MAGA Republicans Are Wasting Time On Political Revenge

Recently, I was proud to be a member of the largest bipartisan Congressional delegation to COP – the annual United Nations Climate Change Conference. Delegates from nearly every country met to discuss goals for tackling climate change and report on their progress.

I was thankful my Republican colleagues joined this trip so they could see the progress that’s being made around the world. We had fantastic meetings with delegates from Germany to Taiwan — and many countries in between, as well as Special Envoy John Kerry and the U.S. negotiators.

Make no mistake — this is a political ploy.

At the conclusion of the conference, a landmark agreement was reached in which nearly 200 nations united to transition away from fossil fuels “in a just, orderly and equitable manner” while “accelerating action in this critical decade, so as to achieve net zero by 2050 in keeping with the science.”

As the top Democrat on the House Energy & Climate subcommittee, and a long-time climate advocate, I am proud to have attended this conference knowing the work we’re doing today will create a bright future for our children and grandchildren.

In the meantime, despite the complete absence of any evidence of wrongdoing, House Republicans authorized a sham impeachment inquiry into President Biden.

Make no mistake — this is a political ploy. When they took the majority, House Republicans had a chance to deliver for the American people. Almost one year later, they have nothing to show for it. Their chaos has made things worse with infighting eating up floor time and taking us to the brink of a government shutdown, not once, but twice.

They’re hoping this move with serve as a distraction to their base and tarnish President Biden’s record to make him easier to beat in the next election. You don’t have to take my word for it. Last week, a House Republican said that this impeachment inquiry was about, “Donald J. Trump 2024, baby!”

Recently, there was new movement from the Supreme Court as they decided to take up Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA — a case with significant implications for access to mifepristone nationwide. Medication abortion makes up most abortions in the U.S. and mifepristone, a pill that makes up half of the gold standard for medication abortion care, is used in the majority of those cases. For women in need of care, this medication is critical, especially as abortion bans already restrict access. Mifepristone has been used safely and effectively by millions of people during its 20+ years of FDA approval, and thankfully, the status quo has been maintained for the time being — meaning mifepristone is still available while the litigation proceeds.

While this development is encouraging, I am also aware that legal proceedings are ongoing. The potential risk to mifepristone access persists until we receive a positive verdict from the Supreme Court.
