Lobo Triathlon set for Sunday, April 9

The University New México (UNM) Lobo Sprint Triathlon for adults and youth is slated Sunday, April 9. Both events begin at UNM Johnson Center with free parking available.

Triathlon participants will run five kilometers around the UNM central campus, bike 20 kilometers out and back to Mesa del Sol and swim 400 meters in UNM’s Seidler Natatorium. Distances for youth athletes under seven are 1/8-mile run, 0.25-mile bike and 25 – meter swim; seven-10 year olds do a one-mile run, 1.5-mile bike and 100-meter swim; while the 11-15 age group will complete a 1.5 mile run, 3.1-mile bike and 200-meter swim. All youth events take place immediately following the adult race.

“Our course really makes this race unique,” said Byron Piatt, race director. “Unlike many races that go along city streets, our running course is in the interior of the UNM campus and past the beloved Duck Pond. Also, with an Olympic pool, we can have swimmers going in the same direction in each lane, which allows faster swimmers to pass more easily.”

The Lobo Triathlon is a sprint distance race, perfect for the first time triathlete or seasoned competitor. Athletes may complete all three legs as individuals, or one or more legs as a team member.

“This is a perfect race for both newcomers to the sport and seasoned athletes,” said Lori Peterkin, development specialist in the UNM School of Medicine. “The distances are attainable for beginners yet challenging enough for those trying to improve their times.” Last year there were nearly 300 athletes from New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado.

The triathlon celebrates the UNM College of Population Health, which launched in 2016 and is only the third of its kind in the world. Population health is a discipline that aims to join public health, prevention, chronic disease management and complex care into a cohesive system that focuses on wellness.

All registered participants will be entered in a drawing to win door prizes. As part of UNM’s commitment to keeping kids active and healthy, proceeds from the race will benefit the UNM Summer Youth Sports Program.
