Empowered Youth Town Hall To Be Held at West High School

Generation Schools Network (GSN,) a Colorado based nonprofit that co-creates healthy school ecosystems by partnering with educators, students, families and communities, announced that an Empowered Youth Town Hall, with Denver City Council members Stacie Gilmore, Sarah Parady and Serena Gonzales-Gutiérrez and District Attorney Beth McCann, will take place to address the intersection of education, gun violence, justice engagement and community solutions at Denver’s West High School, 951 Elati Street, Denver, CO 80204, on February 24, 2024 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. (in-person and Virtual): Register here.

GSN CEO Wendy Loloff-Cooper and Vice President Dr. Jose Silva are leading the community impact effort called Justice-Engaged Students – Colorado (JES-CO) and have submitted for consideration HB24-1216 outlining the Justice-Engaged Student Bill of Rights (JESBOR), a cutting-edge piece of legislation and an invaluable educational resource for justice-engaged students, families, and educators.

“This town hall is about uplifting the leadership of Denver youth and giving their voice the ultimate platform,” GSN CEO, Wendy Loloff-Cooper said. “We invite educators, youth and the community to come together to share their experience, perspective and help to inform passage and community implementation. Through JES-CO, we believe we can remove barriers and dramatically increase educational attainment while attending to safety. Everyone is safest when there is less ambiguity about educational options, and resources are available to ensure student’s needs are met…mental, social, economic, and academic.”

This effort began in 2021, with the support of a School Partnership Justice Innovation Grant from the Colorado Attorney General’s office. GSN conducted a two-year pilot to connect with students, educators, and families most proximate to this issue and collect meaningful data on school disruption. This study helped illustrate that if supports are in place and students receive help navigating school after becoming justice-engaged, they can be successful.
