On June 30th, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a staunch Trump ally, quietly signed SB 664: Verification of Employment Eligibility in order to force the public and some private employers to use the E-verify system. DeSantis was joined by Florida State Representatives Tom Lee and Cord Byrd at the signing of the bill.
E-verify is a deeply flawed federal program often used as an anti-immigrant tool to discriminate against immigrants and people of color. This new law is another attack from DeSantis against immigrant families in Florida, which comes a year after the infamous “show me your papers” SB 168.
“Governor Ron DeSantis continues doing Trump’s dirty work in Florida with the signing of E-verify into law,” stated Thomas Kennedy, Florida Statewide Coordinator of United We Dream. “This is nothing more than red meat to Trump’s racist and anti-immigrant base. Instead of focusing on the over 146,000 people in Florida who have tested positive for COVID-19, DeSantis wants to make life harder for immigrants in Florida.”

“E-verify is not only cruel to immigrant families who are just trying to live in peace and thrive but also is a deeply flawed system that discriminates against people of color. This law will limit the ability of thousands of Floridians from being able to earn a living to sustain themselves and their families,” explained Kennedy.
“Instead of focusing on helping people during a global health crisis, DeSantis is making it harder for people to earn a living. United We Dream forcefully condemns this action by DeSantis and we vow to continue fighting for permanent protections for all immigrants and to continue our work to dismantle the detention and deportation machine, which disproportionately impacts Black and brown people.”
