DPS SchoolChoice Enrollment Season Begins

Last year, the Washington, D.C.-based think tank, The Brookings Institution, rated Denver Public Schools (DPS) No. 1 in the country for school choice among large districts nationwide. In its sixth year, DPS SchoolChoice season runs through Jan. 31. Any DPS student who wants to attend a school other than their automatically assigned neighborhood school can take part in SchoolChoice. The goal of the process is to level the playing field by giving all students access to a high-quality education, regardless of their address or socio-economic background.

During SchoolChoice season, families will rank their students’ top five school preferences on a SchoolChoice form. It combines student’s top five preferences with each school’s admissions priorities and available space. Enrollment forms are available at all DPS schools and can be accessed online at schoolchoice.dpsk12.org or call 720-423-3493.

The SchoolChoice process also ensures equity, consistency and simplicity in the district’s enrollment process. The approach is a crucial piece of the district’s vision of Every Child Succeeds. In working toward that vision, DPS is committed to the Denver Plan 2020 goal of placing Great Schools in Every Neighborhood.

This month, families are invited to learn more about SchoolChoice enrollment and educational options at three events throughout Denver on Saturday, Jan. 21. This process allows parents to learn about the schools in their own neighborhoods as well as gather information on other educational options throughout the school system.

Families searching for information about schools in specific regions of the city can attend the following school expos:

Far Northeast Regional Expo: Saturday, Jan. 21, 10 a.m. to noon, Evie Dennis Campus, 4800 Telluride St., Bldg. 1

Near Northeast School Expo: Saturday, Jan. 21, 10 a.m. to noon, Manual High School, 1700 E. 28th Ave.

West/Southwest Middle School Expo: Saturday, Jan. 21, 10 a.m. to noon, Kepner Campus, Gym, 911 S. Hazel Court

Round 1 of SchoolChoice for 2017-18 runs from Jan. 5 to 4 p.m. on Jan. 31, 2017. Letters and emails notifying families of their school placement will be sent in mid-March.
