Comcast announced that Xfinity Prepaid Internet Service is now available everywhere within the company’s service area. The pay-as-you-go offering lets consumers sign up for Xfinity Internet service and “refill” any time they would like, for either seven or 30 days. The Xfinity Internet service comes without a credit check or annual contract and is available online (xfinityprepaid.com), at select Xfinity stores and participating Boost Mobile retail locations.
“This offering is all about providing customers a flexible and predictable service that can accommodate individual lifestyles and financial needs,” said John Dixon, VP, Consumer Services Group at Comcast. “Our prepaid service gives people more control over their monthly bills and lets families get easy Internet access for their home whenever they want it.”
People who do not have a savings or checking account, what the FDIC refers to as “unbanked,” might be especially interested in Xfinity Prepaid Internet Service. Approximately 9 million U.S. households were unbanked in 2015 and an additional 24.5 million were underbanked, meaning they had a bank account but also obtained financial products and services outside of the banking system.
The same study by the FDIC indicates that Hispanics are the most affected by the lack of access to bank services. While 29.3% of all Latino households have at least a checking or savings account, 16.2% don’t have any bank accounts at all.
Last year, Comcast formed a partnership with Boost Mobile, a leader in the no-contract wireless industry, to offer customers a point-of-purchase option to purchase Xfinity Prepaid Internet. In addition, Boost Mobile customers receive a $5 discount on Xfinity Prepaid Internet refills. Currently, there are more than 800 participating Boost Mobile stores across the nation and Xfinity Prepaid services are expected to be available in more than 4,000 Boost Mobile stores across Comcast’s footprint by the end of the year.
Consumers interested in Xfinity Prepaid Internet pay a one-time starter kit fee that includes all necessary equipment, like a wireless gateway, and 30 days of service. There are no limitations on the number of times the service can be renewed and customers can refill services on their own schedule.
