8th Annual Dolores Huerta Day of Service, Learning

Nearly 350 grade school students and dozens of adult volunteers will descend on La Plazita Gardens at Sanchez Farm Friday, March 31 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to learn about farming, César Chávez, Dolores Huerta and the migrant farm workers’ movement. Many organizations and individuals are involved in organizing and volunteering to teach children in a fun, culturally enriched environment.

The Dolores Huerta Day of Service learning uses traditional, hands-on, experiential learning techniques to help elementary and middle school children learn about such things as local organic farming, teatro campesino, the history of acequias, cooking with solar ovens, and native medicinal herbs at 15 different workshops.

“We’re excited to see this event continue to grow and transform young minds this year,” says Erika Robers, Co-Organizer of Recuerda a César Chávez Committee Day of Service. “Students from previous years say they can’t wait to come back! We have so much fun while we learn.”

Many organizations and individuals join together to make the event a success. La Plazita Institute, Young Women United, Food Corps, County Open Space, Kids Cook!, South Valley Academy, UNM CAMP students, VISTA, and Valle De Oro Wildlife Refuge, are all volunteering at the event to teach students about Chicano History, sustainable farming and nature conservation and appreciation.
