In a wide-ranging conversation that blended lessons from the past with a bold outlook for Colorado’s future, Colorado Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Phil Weiser joined The Honorable Roy Romer and former Denver Mayor and U.S. Cabinet Secretary Federico Peña on Oct. 6 for a fireside chat in Denver.

The event, held at the William Matthews Studio, located in Five Points within the River North Art District—a historically significant neighborhood that has long been central to Colorado’s cultural and civic life—marks a pivotal moment in Weiser’s campaign. It offered the public and press an early look at the leaders who inspire his ambitious ideas for building a stronger, more equitable, and more resilient Colorado. He plans to release his Colorado Blueprint this Saturday. The conversation was framed by the insights of two of the most transformative leaders in state history, both of whom have endorsed Weiser’s candidacy.

“The challenges we face today: economic uncertainty, threats to our democracy, and the need to build an inclusive economy, require the kind of innovative and values-driven leadership Roy Romer and Federico Peña exemplified,” said Weiser. “Like they did in the ‘80s and ‘90s, we must define who we are as a state—and act boldly to build the next great chapter for Colorado.”

Romer, who served as governor from 1987 to 1999, was instrumental in shepherding Colorado through a period of deep economic turmoil toward long-term prosperity. Now serving as honorary chair of the Weiser campaign, Romer emphasized the power of leadership rooted in connection, clarity, and conviction: “Listening is one of the key elements of getting things done in this world,” said Romer. “Phil Weiser is a great listener in Colorado right now. He listens very carefully to what is the problem and what is the solution, and then, he does something about it.”

We are at a defining moment. The question is whether we will rise to meet it.”

Former Denver Mayor Federico Peña, who also served as U.S. Secretary of Transportation and Secretary of Energy, shared his perspective as a pioneering civic leader whose administration helped transform Denver’s economy and skyline, launching projects like Denver International Airport and LoDo’s historic revitalization: “Phil is the right person at the right time, with the moral courage, sense of purpose, and energy to meet this moment,” said Peña. “Just as we once asked Denver to ‘Imagine a Great City,’ Phil is asking Colorado to imagine a greater future—and he has the experience and the vision to lead us there.”

Throughout the morning, Weiser previewed the kind of leadership he’ll bring as governor, including being unafraid to think big and take calculated risks to move Colorado forward. The event also served as a reminder of how far Colorado has come and how much is at stake.

“We are at a defining moment,” said Weiser. “The question is whether we will rise to meet it. With the people of Colorado, and the wisdom of leaders like Roy and Federico behind me, I am confident that we will.”

Phil Weiser serves as Colorado’s Attorney General. As the state’s top legal officer, he’s taken on powerful interests, defended democracy and reproductive rights, and stood up for working people across Colorado. Now he’s running for governor to continue that fight—and to build a future that works for all Coloradans.
