US Taxpayers Will Pay for $1.6 Billion for Border Wall

On July 27th, the House Republicans passed a funding proposal that provided a staggering $1.6 billion in taxpayer construction funding for Trump’s unpopular border wall, despite widespread pubic rejection of the Trump wall.

“We adamantly reject this move by the Republican House leadership to hand over more than a billion dollars in taxpayer money for a monument to intolerance. The vast majority of Americans oppose a taxpayer-funded wall and I’m sure can think of many other national priorities where our tax money would be better spent,” said UnidosUS President and CEO Janet Murguía.

The smaller appropriations package, known as a “minibus,” lumped the $1.6 billion for a border wall with funding for defense, military construction, and veterans affairs, among others, circumventing standard procedures on appropriations bills, which are formulated in a more bipartisan fashion.

“We are going to continue to fight funding for this immoral wall and will look to the Senate to reject this proposal and instead focus on finding ways to improve our nation’s immigration system through real, comprehensive reform,” Murguía concluded.
