Sheriff’s Dept. Honors Chief Sonya Gillespie, First African American Female Division Chief As She Retires

The Denver Sheriff Department (DSD) proudly recognized Division Chief Sonya Gillespie as she retired November 30, 2025, for her historic appointment as the first African American female to hold the position of Division Chief in the department’s 123-year history.  She served for over 33 years with the DSD. Throughout her distinguished career, Chief Gillespie held numerous leadership roles, most recently serving as Division Chief of the Administration Division. Her leadership was instrumental in advancing employee well-being, equity and inclusion, and strategic growth across the department.

“Chief Gillespie’s appointment to Division Chief was not only a historic milestone—it is a testament to her unwavering dedication, integrity, and compassion,” said Sheriff Elias Diggins. “She spent her career lifting others, advocating for wellness, and leading with heart. Her leadership will continue to shape the future of our department and inspire generations to come.”

 

Chief Gillespie’s influence extended beyond Denver. She served on national platforms, including the Board of the American Jail Association and the American Correctional Association/Bureau of Justice Assistance Staff Wellness Advisory Committee. Chief Gillespie attributes her strength and resilience to her deep faith and strong family bonds, which she considers foundational to her leadership.

 

The Denver City Council recognized and honored Chief Sonya Gillespie with a proclamation during its meeting on December 1, 2025.  She was recognized for her extraordinary dedication, distinguished career of public service, and enduring contributions to the Denver Sheriff Department, the broader Denver community, and the advancement of public safety locally and nationally.
