The Santa Fe Children and Youth Commission was established to survey and assess the needs of the children and youth within the city of Santa Fe; identify and recommend to the governing body legislation, policies, and programs that promote the healthy development of young people; determine priorities for program development; advocate in the community on behalf of children and youth; and plan short- and long-range improvements for young people by applying a results-based framework, from birth through the age of 21.
The Commission receives three percent (3%) of the gross receipts tax and administers funding to local nonprofits on a two-year cycle at approximately $1.2 million annually. The Commission works in partnership with the City liaison and the Youth and Family Services Division to provide advice on ways to effectively plan, coordinate, and support child and youth efforts in the Santa Fe community and present a plan to the governing body for approval.
The City, through the Children and Youth Commission, improves the lives of Santa Fe children by providing funding and support for local nonprofit organizations and public school programs that work. The Commission celebrated its 30th Anniversary in 2019-2020.
The responsibilities of the Committee include oversight of the Children and Youth Fund, review of applications for the fund and making recommendations, and ensuring access to services for children and youth of Santa Fe. The committee is advisory and makes funding recommendations to the Governing Body.
The Commission is now seeking candidates to fill member vacancies.
Membership is appointed by the Mayor with approval from the Governing Body. Considerations shall be made to ensure that the membership reflects a range of ages, lived experiences, and professional and community backgrounds. Members must reside within Santa Fe County. The Committee meets six times per year. The meetings are open to the public.
