Organizations Join Nationwide Boycott of Motel 6

Editor’s Note: The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) issued the following statement in support of the Arizona Legislative Caucus boycott of Motel 6.

The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) is deeply troubled by the unsavory and morally corrupt actions of Arizona Motel 6 employees who turned over private information of guests in Latino majority neighborhoods to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

Individuals, regardless of immigration status, should not have to worry about ICE agents crashing through their doors when they rest their heads at night due to a gross violation of privacy and egregious racial profiling by hotel employees. This kind of overt targeting of the Latino community and blatant disrespect for the well-being and privacy of guests will not be tolerated by our nation’s Latino leadership.
While we were pleased to see that corporate leadership has directed Motel 6 staff to no longer share guest lists with ICE, we believe that the company still has a long way to go before it regains the trust of Latinos, immigrants and all Americans. A simple fix will not undo the damage inflicted by the immoral actions of hotel staff in Arizona, and we call on Motel 6 leadership to outline how it plans to ensure the safety and security of its guests moving forward.

NALEO calls on Latino elected and appointed officials nationwide to join us in a boycott of Motel 6 until the company is able to effectively demonstrate a change in culture, policies and practices that will guarantee protections for all guests, regardless of immigration status or race.

Latinos infused more than $1.4 trillion into the U.S. economy in 2016, making the nation’s second largest population group an economic force to be reckoned with. We are ready to use the power of our pocketbooks to take a stand against hate and attacks on the immigrant community and to support those companies who uphold the values and ideals of NALEO.

We are proud to stand alongside our colleagues in the Arizona Legislative Caucus as they push back against targeting of the Latino community. NALEO calls on Latino elected and appointed officials nationwide to join us in a boycott of Motel 6 until the company is able to effectively demonstrate a change in culture, policies and practices that will guarantee protections for all guests, regardless of immigration status or race.
