Mayor Hancock Begins Youth Summer Transportation Program

The City and County of Denver is collaborating with the Regional Transportation District (RTD) and Denver Public Schools (DPS) to launch On MY Way!, a summer pilot program that provides transit fares to youth through RTD’s new Mobile Tickets app. Between June 1 and August 31, young riders will be able to travel locally or regionally by accessing the passes through the RTD app on their cell phones.

Youth who do not have a cell phone will receive a Smart Card to use as a free bus pass.

“This is exactly what we’re talking about when we say that equity and opportunity are the pillars of everything we do at the City and County of Denver,” Mayor Michael Hancock said. “And it starts with making sure each and every child who grows up in Denver has the same access to recreation, education, jobs and other opportunities regardless of where they live or their family’s means.”

RTD is piloting a new feature in mobile ticketing, allowing them to quickly and seamlessly issue RTD tickets to mobile phones. City agencies, including the Office of Children’s Affairs, Denver Parks and Recreation and the Department of Public Works, are working together to fund the mobile ticket fares for youth participating in the On MY Way! program. This is the second year RTD has partnered with the city to provide young people with mobility options during the summer.

“Summer is a busy time of year for young people as they head to work and leisure activities throughout the region,” said RTD CEO and General Manager Dave Genova. “Our collaboration with Denver is yet another way that RTD is meeting customer expectations by helping them complete their trips in a manner that is easy, convenient and accessible.”

“DPS is honored to have our students participate in this innovative pilot program that provides them with access to safe and reliable transportation,” DPS Superintendent Susana Cordova said. “Giving our students access to RTD buses during the summer months is a step in the right direction so that our youth can have greater mobility throughout Denver.”

To participate in the On MY Way! youth summer transportation program, youth must be between the ages of 12 and 18, have a MY Denver Card and complete a short online survey.
