The Colorado Secretary of State has announced that a slate of ballot measures that would allow government overreach into private family decisions has qualified for Colorado’s November 2026 ballot. These measures take important, personal decisions away from parents, schools, and medical professionals and hand them to politicians.
Initiative #109 would bar transgender students from participating in school sports consistent with their gender identity. This could force students to confirm their gender simply to participate on a team, opening the door to invasive inspections and humiliating scrutiny that risk the safety and well-being of all Colorado children. In practice, it could allow anyone to demand inspections of young girls who look “too tall” or “too strong” just to let them play sports.
Initiative #110 would restrict access to certain health care for transgender people, taking decisions away from families and the doctors they trust. These are deeply personal medical decisions made carefully between parents and providers, and inserting politicians into that process represents a significant government overreach.
“Now that these measures have qualified for the ballot, voters should know what’s at stake,” said Nadine Bridges, Executive Director of One Colorado. “Coloradans have always valued individual freedom and the rights of families to make private decisions without political interference, but these measures would go against those core values. One could expose students to invasive inspections just to play sports, while the other would place politicians between families and their doctors in deeply personal health care decisions. That kind of government overreach puts privacy and dignity at risk and doesn’t align with our Colorado values.”
“As a parent, my job is to protect my children and make decisions about their health and well-being alongside the doctors and providers we trust — not politicians,” said Christin Kreml of Timnath, CO. “These measures would strip that authority from families like mine and hand it to people who have never met my children and have no business in our medical decisions. Every parent in Colorado, regardless of politics, should be alarmed when the government tries to insert itself into private family matters. I will stand firmly against any legislation that undermines a family’s right to make the best decisions for their own children.”
