Florida Governor Signs Law to Terrorize Immigrant Families

Last week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law Senate Bill 168, one of the worst anti-immigrant laws in the nation after Arizona’s “show me your papers” law.

The following is a statement from Andrea Mercado, Executive Director of the New Florida Majority: “When someone tells you who they are, believe them. Ron DeSantis ran on an anti-immigrant platform, building Trump’s wall with his kids on a TV commercial, and then pretended to cover it all up with a Latina candidate for Lieutenant Governor. We never forgot who Ron DeSantis was, so it’s no surprise he would support one of the worst anti-immigrant laws in the country.

“We stand with the Florida Immigrant Coalition and will back legal challenges to this law. In the meantime, we will protect our immigrant families and communities who are being unfairly targeted and terrorized by a state that owes so much to immigrants’ economic and cultural contributions.”

Florida’s new anti-immigrant law forces law enforcement and other public employees to collaborate with immigration authorities, which will increase the amount of immigrants who will be detained and deported, and the amount of families and communities that will be torn apart.

With this new law, local law enforcement is expected to prioritize immigration enforcement over any local needs to address crime or safety in our communities, and the costs will be paid by Florida’s taxpayers. This forced collaboration will increase the detention and deportation of any immigrant in Florida comes in contact with local police including anyone pulled over for a broken taillight, anyone who reports a crime, or anyone who drives without a license. It also opens the door to the racial profiling of any Floridian for the color of their skin or their language.
