Defying the Dysfunction

Last week, we saw more of the same dysfunction from Donald Trump and House Republicans, as they continue pursuing their senseless, self-serving agenda while ignoring the pressing issues facing Americans.

On July 16, Donald Trump addressed the nation and continued to spew his lies and grievances about the 2020 election, which he undeniably lost to President Joe Biden. He touted his so-called booming economy, which is crushing Denverites with sky high costs. And he boasted about lowering health care prices, after he and his GOP allies in Congress kicked tens of millions of Americans off their health insurance.

It was pathetic and no wonder Trump is solely focused on jamming his anti-democratic voting bill through Congress ahead of the midterm elections. House Republicans embraced Trump’s top priority this week as they, once again, attached his election-rigging bill to a foreign aid spending package that they know Senate Republicans will eventually strip out. Don’t worry—I voted NO on their foolish scheme for a third time.

Also, House Republicans brought up a bill to establish Daylight Saving Time as the new permanent time. This move is not only tone deaf to the issues going on in our country and around the world, but it’s also an issue that the American people are divided on—from farmers to educators and even the medical community. It is unclear how we resolve the issue. No one likes changing their clocks back and forth, but the answer is not choosing a national time standard based on the MAGA base’s preference. I voted NO on this bill because whatever path forward we choose must be grounded in science and developed after a full debate.

Regardless of their dysfunction, I am still fighting for you and your family’s wellbeing. Last week, I introduced bipartisan legislation to help eradicate the hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the United States.

HCV affects nearly 4 million Americans with as many as 100,000 new cases each year. This virus also kills dozens of people each day, even though there is a cure. The problem is many people who have the virus aren’t aware of it, since HCV is often asymptomatic. That is why my bill, which creates a national test-and-treat program, is so crucial—to help diagnose, treat, and ultimately cure, those affected.
