Colorado People’s Alliance Expresses Outrage Over Second Suncor Incident

Colorado People’s Alliance (COPA) has been leading the fight for clean air and accountability to corporate polluters. We are extremely angry and upset that corporations like Suncor continue to ask for trust from the community but continue to break their promise and act irresponsibly. We cannot trust corporations to self-regulate. We must act and have real policy solutions for corporations like Suncor to be held accountable for the harm they are causing to our communities.

Yesterday afternoon, Brighton Boulevard in Commerce City was closed because of yet another incident caused by Suncor where clay-like material was spewing into the air from the facility. This is the second incident of unknown materials being released into the air since December. We are outraged by the lack of information provided to the community about the type of harmful gases that the people in Commerce City were exposed to.

“I didn’t even know that there had been another incident. With everything else going on these incidents are causing more damage to people’s health. And this happened yesterday? Where was I? I stopped working and was home but there’s still things happening out there and looks like Suncor is still doing the same thing,” said Theresa, a resident of Commerce City.

Suncor is one of the largest polluters in the state and it is time that they are held accountable for the harm they are causing to the air and quality of life of the community they reside in. Since the last incident in December, they have created no plan to prevent these incidences from continuing to happen and have proved that they take no responsibility for the damage they are causing and the health risks to both workers and community. We demand that they restore faith and trust by releasing information about the gases that have been released into the air and a plan to prevent this from continuing to happen.
