Colorado Democrats endorsed Initiative 89, which puts abortion rights into the Colorado Constitution and protects Coloradans’ freedom to make their own decisions about abortion without government interference.
The text of Proposed Initiative 89 reads: “A change to the Colorado constitution recognizing the right to abortion, and, in connection therewith, prohibiting the state and local governments from denying, impeding, or discriminating against the exercise of that right, allowing abortion to be a covered service under health insurance plans for Colorado state and local government employees and enrollees in state and local governmental insurance programs.”
“This issue is personal to me and my family, and I’m proud that Colorado Democrats support the right of every Coloradan to make their own decisions about abortion without the government getting in the way,” said Shad Murib, Chair of the Colorado Democratic Party. “I’m disgusted by the Colorado GOP bending backwards to earn the approval of Donald Trump, who has repeatedly stated how proud he is that his Supreme Court appointees overturned Roe v. Wade. Our state has long been a leader on abortion rights, and we can be again in 2024. Coloradans will make sure no politician is able to put their ideology ahead of our freedoms by supporting proposed Initiative 89 this fall.”
According to Karen Middleton, President of Cobalt, “This is a chance in 2024 for Coloradans to restore in our state Constitution what the Supreme Court took away with the Dobbs decision. Proposed Initiative 89 puts our Colorado values on abortion rights into the Colorado Constitution by recognizing the right to abortion and ensuring fairness in insurance coverage. Colorado voters across the state strongly support abortion rights and have repeatedly made their wishes known at the ballot box. We very much appreciate the endorsement of the Colorado Democratic Party. We have already seen incredible enthusiasm and volunteer support in every corner of Colorado, which we expect to continue through November.”
