Celebrate the Holidays with a Tribute to Colorado’s Diverse Food and Culture

In celebration of the diverse food and culture of Colorado, the Chicano Humanities Arts Council (CHAC) is hosting a Tummy Tale author’s reunion, on Sat. Nov. 9th, from 1-3 pm at the Corky Gonzales Library, 1498 Irving St, Denver, CO 80204. The event is free and open to the public.

For almost 30 years, the Tummy Tales series has been a journey of love to preserve and record the rich cultural heritage of food tales from Colorado. Long-time editor Ed Winograd will be honored at the event for his tireless contributions to the historic project that includes over 80 stories from some of the state’s most famous storytellers. The event will also serve as a call out to established writers and young up-and-coming writers for submissions to Pastelito!Que Bonito! is the ninth and final installment in the series.

Last Fall, the 8th book in the series Primas, Manitas and Calabacitas & Other Tummy Tales, was launched and featured contributor Lucille Ruibal Rivera. Rivera, the former executive director and co-chair of the Chicano Humanities Arts Council (CHAC) was a staunch community activist. She passed away shortly after that book’s release, a victim of domestic violence. Her contribution to the anthology was a testimony to her unwavering commitment to preserving the legacy of Colorado’s cultural foods. It was important to her that families from our stat,e not forget the history of our regional cuisine.

“Lucille hoped that one additional book in the series would be added that featured a new young writer,” stated the book’s illustrator, Damaris Santos. “Specifically, she wanted to recognize the ten-year partnership between CHAC and MSU Denver Journey Through Our Heritage program college students in the production and creation of the series since 2014.”

Lucille hoped that one final book would once again highlight a university or a high school student involved in the JTOH program. This reunion honors Ed Winograd for his commitment as the editor to keeping Lucille’s wish alive. Among contributing writers to the series from MSU Denver over the last decade are alumni Nelson Moreno Avila, Kristen Simpson, Natalie Gove, Damaris Santos, and Sean Easton along with MSU Denver professor Dr. Sandra Doe.

Featured authors on hand for the Tummy Tale reunion on Nov. 9th will be Margie Domingo, Sandra Doe, Nelson Moreno Avila, Carina Oliva-Quiroz, Mary Ozanic, Maria Ramírez, Vangie Sena, Charlene García Simms, Jane Treat, and LaRene Wolfe and others.
