Progressive Democrat Bryan Lindstrom celebrated the kickoff of his State House District 36 campaign on Tuesday, September 12, at at Lady Justice Brewing hosted by more than two dozen local elected officials, education advocates, and community leaders. Lindstrom’s progressive campaign’s success in its early months caught the eye of conservative commentators on Fox News, who unjustly attacked him for fighting for economic equality.

Colorado progressive leaders are rallying around Lindstrom’s candidacy, including Aurora City Council Members Juan Marcano, Alison Coombs, Crystal Murillo, and Ruben Medina; State Representatives Lorena Garcia, Iman Jodeh, Mandy Lindsay, Javier Mabrey, David Ortiz, and Representative-Elect Tim Hernández; Arapahoe County officials Commissioner Jessica Campbell-Swanson, Treasurer Michael Westerberg, and Assessor PK Kaiser; and former Arapahoe County Democratic Party Chair Kristin Mallory Westerberg.

“Bryan is a fierce advocate for students, teachers, and Aurora’s working class. As House Districts 36’s next representative, he will continue to be a champion for public education, economic justice, and environmental protections. I know Bryan will work hard every day to make Colorado a fair and just place where working families can thrive,” said Aurora Council Member and mayoral candidate Juan Marcano.

Lindstrom finished his first quarter of campaigning with leading support in a crowded field. In his first 37 days, Lindstrom’s campaign raised more than $15,000 – the most funds raised of any candidate in the race. More than 68 percent of his contributions were $50 and under, and at least 90 percent of contributions came from Colorado residents.

“I’m humbled to have the overwhelming support of our neighbors and community,” said Lindstrom. “It’s clear that Aurora and Colorado are ready for a truly progressive state representative who will fight for the working class over corporate interests.”

Lindstrom is an Aurora Public Schools teacher, union organizer, education policy expert, and lifelong Auroran. His father, an Air Force veteran and retired meat packing foreman, and his mother, who continues to work various office jobs, instilled in him the values of community and helping others. Lindstrom attended Aurora Public Schools and embarked on a 12-year career in education after finishing college. He has spent the last eight years teaching at Hinkley High School in Aurora.

Immersed in the education system, Lindstrom gained a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between education, housing, worker protections, and criminal justice. He recognized that the needs of his students, his profession, and even his own family could not be adequately met solely from within the confines of his classroom.

Motivated by rising housing costs and consecutive pay freezes within Aurora Public Schools, Lindstrom channeled his leadership skills to the Aurora Education Association, serving on the Board of Directors and political committee. Through these roles, he focused on electing school board leaders who prioritized addressing the pressing issues faced by educators and the community. His efforts proved fruitful, as subsequent years saw pay increases that allowed Lindstrom to pursue his dream of owning a home near his workplace.

This experience prompted Lindstrom to extend his advocacy to the city level, recognizing that his own experiences as an educated individual from a middle-class background could empower him to fight for those with less proximity to power and access to resources. Through years of local political involvement, Lindstrom realized that the only way for him to address the intersections of education justice, housing justice, economic justice, criminal justice, environmental justice, immigration justice, and other issues dear to his community was through state-level policies. With a firm commitment to making a difference, Lindstrom aspires to be a catalyst for positive transformation and advocate for a more equitable society.
