Biden’s Executive Order: A Bold Step Forward But Still Falls Short

Editor’s Note: The following statement in response to President Biden’s executive order on restricting asylum requests at the U.S.-México border.

We understand that President Biden is trying to use the tools he has to gain control of our border. However, it falls short of addressing the comprehensive reform our community truly needs. While the order tackles the immediate issue of border crossings, it misses the mark by not targeting the real culprits — human traffickers and drug smugglers who exploit desperate migrants.

A comprehensive approach must include partnerships with other countries to tackle the root causes of migration while also creating a path to citizenship for long-term undocumented residents who have contributed to our economy and society for years. This includes DACA and TPS recipients, as well as the parents and spouses of American citizens.

Our polls show that Latino voters overwhelmingly support these measures as essential to a balanced and effective immigration strategy. Congressional inaction has exacerbated the crisis at the border, leaving Biden with limited options.

Still, Biden’s overall immigration policies stand in stark contrast to the draconian policies and proposals that Republicans continue to put forth, which only seek to dehumanize and demonize hard-working and law-abiding people who contribute positively to our economy and society.

We need to work towards solutions and put an end to efforts that continue to demonize hard-working immigrants. Refusal to address the real issues perpetuates the dysfunction in our immigration system and hurts innocent families.
