Donald Trump’s Big Ugly Budget Bill could slash health insurance for 17 million Americans and take food away from 2 million more. Congress must stand up against Trump and protect these programs.
Good Trouble Lives On: National Day of Action (July 17), which as of June 30, has organized more than 600 events and counting, demands the end of the wealthy and well-connected slashing programs that working people rely on – including Medicaid, SNAP, and Social Security – to line their own pockets.
“Our nation once correctly declared a ‘war on poverty,’ but today, in cuts to Medicare, our great nation is declaring war on being poor,” said Barbara Arnwine and Daryl Jones, co-leaders of Transformative Justice Coalition. “These mean spirited and draconian slashes and cuts to SNAP, Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare are unconscionable. Our protection of healthcare is in the hands of electing a Congress that addresses the needs of all Americans, not just the wealthy. We must not only lift our voices to dissent, but we must lift our votes to address any threat to healthcare cuts.”
“Social programs like Medicaid, SNAP and Social Security keep people alive,” said Christine Wood, co-director of Declaration for American Democracy. “If Congress passes Trump’s deplorable budget bill, they will sicken, starve and kill millions of Americans in order to give tax cuts to rich people. Congress must serve the American people, protect these programs and vote against this bill.”
“This is an ugly and dangerous bill that strips health care and food access from millions of Americans,” said Celina Stewart, CEO of the League of Women Voters. “As we approach Independence Day, the League is on record opposing this cruel legislation, because taking basic necessities from our communities is nothing to celebrate.”
Happening July 17, Good Trouble Lives On will respond to the attacks posed on our civil and human rights by the Trump administration and to remind them that in America, the power lies with the people. In memory of the late civil rights leader, U.S. Congressman John Lewis, we will take to the streets, courthouses and community spaces to carry forward his fight for justice, voting rights and dignity for all.
Good Trouble Lives On is led by Transformative Justice Coalition, Black Voters Matter, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the Declaration for American Democracy Coalition, Mi Familia en Acción and more. For more information on Good Trouble Lives On,
