In response to the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement murdering Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, Texas, and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine, 50501 demands independent investigations into these murders, immediate release of the body-camera footage and the shooters’ names, justice for both of their families as well as the families of every single victim of ICE terror, and the immediate abolition of ICE.

“You can no more ‘reform’ a terrorist organization than you can reform ICE,” said 50501 National Press Coordinator Hunter Dunn. “ICE has shown over and over again that it cannot be fixed, cannot be overhauled, and cannot be reformed. We must abolish ICE, strip it for parts, prosecute its agents and their enablers for their crimes against the American people, and build a new civil immigration system based on humanitarian, American principles instead. Justice must be served.”

ICE Murdered Innocent People

On July 7th, the Department of Immigration & Customs Enforcement murdered another one of our neighbors: Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, Texas. Just six days later, ICE murdered Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine. Even today, as we were preparing this release, ICE struck again, as a tractor-trailer struck and killed a 28-year-old man during an encounter with ICE outside of a gas station in St. Augustine, Florida. All 3 of these tragedies are now added to the list of at least 85 people who have died during or because of interactions with immigration enforcement officers during Trump’s second administration: 8 who were executed by CBP, DHS, or ICE officers, 3 who died while fleeing ICE, 52 who died in ICE detention, 1 who died shortly after being released, and 21 who died in U.S. Border Patrol custody.

The Department of Homeland Security attempted to justify ICE’s murder of Araujo by claiming that he “weaponized his vehicle” against them, but their story was contradicted by witnesses. Now ICE is, of course, attempting to deport one of those witnesses and is reportedly pressuring others to self-deport. DHS previously claimed that another ICE murder victim, Renee Nicole Good, weaponized her vehicle against ICE, which was a lie. In Guerrero’s case, DHS could not even be bothered to claim that Guerrero weaponized his vehicle, instead claiming he was an “illegal alien” who “attempted to flee the scene,” that an ICE agent who was “fearing for public safety” shot and killed him. In both cases, the Department of Homeland Security claims that the ICE agents were not wearing body cameras, despite former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem’s pledge on February 2nd to ensure that ICE agents nationwide would be wearing body cameras back. ICE has been completely unable to justify their killings – which makes the killings of both Araujo and Guerrero murders.

These deaths were not inevitable. They were the result of grotesque policies and the actions of evil people. As we have seen time and time again, ICE lied about the circumstances of these killings in an attempt to deflect blame from the ugly reality of the Trump Administration’s white nationalist, ethnic cleansing program.

“We cannot become desensitized,” said 50501 spokesman and Orlando-based organizer Corey Hill. “We cannot allow the murder and kidnapping of our friends, family, and neighbors to continue. We are listening closely to the demands of the families, as well as organizers on the ground across the country, to align our demands with theirs.”

Call to Action

50501 is supporting local protests in Maine, Texas, and Florida, as well as solidarity actions in communities across the country. In addition, 50501 is mobilizing for both the Good Trouble Lives On Weekend of Action from July 17-19, which, alongside its “Teach! Reach! Preach!” program, is focused on fighting against discrimination and for constitutional rights (including for ICE victims), and the Justice for Lorenzo and Justice for Johan day of action on July 25, 2026.
